Capri Pools Advances Des Moines Recreational Facility

November 18, 2025 | Excavation is underway for a multi-purpose pool at the new Northside Community Recreation Center in Des Moines, Ia. St. Louis-based Capri Pools and Aquatics expects to complete the natatorium in March of next year.

The Northside Community Center replaces the John R. Grubb Community YMCA facility which will be demolished after construction completion of the new 40,000-square-foot building by contractor JE Dunn Construction. Enough of the structure is in place for Capri to begin construction of the natatorium.

Designed by Counsilman-Hunsaker, the 3,400-square-foot pool will have one side dedicated to three 75-foot-long lanes of lap swimming. The other side will feature a zero entry to a 3.6-foot-deep recreational pool with fun water features, including a basketball hoop, small tipping buckets, and an ADA-friendly spray feature and a tunnel of cascading water.

The painted pool includes a non-slip tile. A wing wall with bench seating will divide the pools. The filtration system is designed to efficiently circulate 600 gallons of water per minute.
